August 30 - September 23, 2016

Inspired by our ongoing fascination with the unknown, Gipson creates a crystallized netherworld, nestled amongst our own. Liquid Jungle transforms NTP into an immersive, cinematic space hosting materials and creatures that simultaneously attract and repel.

Bre Gipson is an Oakland-based artist who uses common and discarded materials as a means to physically reform the landscape.  She received her BA from University of California Berkeley in 2012 and her MFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2016.  She has exhibited in various art spaces, including Pataphysical Society in Portland, the California African American Museum in Los Angeles, White Walls Gallery in San Francisco, and the University of Alberta in Canada.

bre gipson is a witchy west coast artist making afro futurist art and experiences. bre was NTP’s first ever artist and holds a deep place in our hearts. bre was out an out of town artist and we shipped her art here and installed an site-specific installation, and as would, bre’s opening reception was our first reception and it was quite a bit of fun. bre ( being in her home of oakland,CA) facetimed in to her party, eating oreos and being dressed to the nines distance did not deter bre’s good time, which speaks to her personality and beautiful manner. her art is a further reflection of her sentiments and perspectives of the world.

bre named her show liquid jungle, very mindful of her location being a bathroom. her art consisted of  multicolored center piece of blues, greens, and purples that was furry and crystalline, rubbery, tender,  and foreign. maybe from space, maybe some undiscovered ocean inhabitant. the piece hung in the middle of the mirror of the bathroom reflecting, continuing thoughts of water and oceans, a projection and soundtrack would loop, and combined with the colored lights, would fill the space with such moods that it was easy to forget this was a bathroom at all.
