juneteenth

in the summer of 2017 nat turner project started our residency at c3: initiative in st johns portland oregon. this residency would include a june and july show, and this residency was kicked off with a massive juneteenth party. party complete with bbq, catered by Dubs st johns, face painting (s/o jamaali roberts), live music by ados 33 and zed kenzo, and a poetry reading by olivia olivia. this was held in the patio/ backyard of c3. it was a lot of fun and the food was delicious and we had so many left overs. and juneteenth was also the kick off of our post PNCA life. a time of celebration and community.

juneteenth was actual freeing of enslaved peoples of the united states in 1865, when the emancipation proclamation was written in 1863. it felt going doing something like this, and creating an event of this scale was a first for us, with an outstanding aspect for me being, the flying out of zed kenzo from milwaukee wi. we also gave her a place to stay and a host to show her around. this was a great time for NTP.
